Fondation Beyeler

In 1997 van Gogh, Cézanne, Monet, Picasso, Ernst, Miró, Giacometti, Rothko, Warhol, Lichtenstein, and many other great artists of classical Modernism all found a home in the Fondation Beyeler in Riehen, which has since become Switzerland’s art museum with the highest number of visitors. Designed by the Italian architect Renzo Piano, the museum houses an outstanding art collection of modern and contemporary art. With his tranquil, restrained building, Renzo Piano has created “a museum intended to serve art, and not the other way round.”

Consisting of around 300 masterpieces by modern and contemporary masters, the Beyeler Collection was accumulated by Hildy and Ernst Beyeler during more than fifty years as successful gallery owners. The collection’s scope and reputation is constantly being enhanced by the acquisition of major works, most recently, of works by Louise Bourgeois, Lucio Fontana, Roy Lichtenstein, Franz West among others as well as through temporary loans from private or artists’ collections. Selected examples of tribal art from Africa, Alaska and Oceania are also part of the collection and are displayed side by side with European and American works, creating exciting encounters.

Through temporary exhibitions the Fondation Beyeler repeatedly creates links between the permanent collection’s contents and modern as well as contemporary art. “Max Ernst”; “Gerhard Richter”; “Gustave Courbet”; “Peter Doig”; “Paul Gauguin”; “Marlene Dumas” feature among the most recent shows. Further, three new presentations of the permanent collection are held every year. Contemporary art projects, public space projects and ongoing cooperations with the Daros Collection and the Calder Foundation supplement the program. Besides these exhibitions and projects, the museum offers visitors a varied cultural events schedule featuring performances, lectures, talks, concerts as well as specific  workshops for children, youths and families. Editorial activities comprehend catalogues as well as publications for children and adolescents. The new online shop features special editions by contemporary artists.
